Prague, the “Golden City” is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. The first university in Central Europe was once founded in the Czech metropolis and for centuries it was one of the most important economic and political centers in Europe. The unique Old Town with Prague Castle, countless pubs and the unique flair on the Vltava River are made for a city trip! But also the central Bohemian countryside with the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kutná Hora and the tranquil Mělník has much to offer!
Framed by Slavkovský les and the Krkonoše Mountains lies one of the most beautiful landscapes in Czech Republic. Here, both hiking fans and skiers get their money’s worth. And the two historic towns of Liberec and Ústí nad Labem have a magical flair and are nowhere nearly as overcrowded as the capital.
Western Bohemia is definitely one of the most exciting regions of the country. This is due on the one hand to the beautiful “beer capital” Plzeň, but on the other hand to a fascinating volcanic landscape with mountains and swamps. These also gave rise to the famous spas of Františkovy Lázně, Mariánské Lázně and Karlovy Vary on the border with northern Bohemia, which form the so-called Bohemian Spa Triangle. And in Cheb, an old Sudeten German town awaits you, where once the famous general Wallenstein lived his last hours.
Forests and lakes are the main features of the area on the border with Germany and Austria. Here you can also hike for hours, the Bohemian Forest and the Gratzen Mountains are ideal for this. And if you’re thirsty after your hike, stop by České Budějovice, the Czech Republic’s second most important “beer town” after Plzeň. But also Český Krumlov is worth a visit. The old town with its castle on the Vltava River was even declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO because of its beauty.
The area in the north of the country is mountainous and still is under the radar of many Western tourists. In addition to the uniquely beautiful nature, there are also exciting cities to discover here, such as Pardubice with its Renaissance castle and the famous main market. Hradec Králové, on the other hand, is known to many from history lessons because of its famous battle. However, only a few people know that the city has a rich history, a magnificent market square with numerous town houses and countless sacral buildings of different styles. High time to change that!
Czech wine? You heard right. While Bohemia is characterized by its rich beer culture, Moravia mainly produces grape juice. And it now has an excellent reputation and regularly wins international awards. That’s why the region has become a real insider’s tip, especially for culinary fans. The absolute highlight of the region, however, is Brno, the second largest city in the country. In the old town you can find architectural representatives of almost all European styles. Of particular interest is the Villa Tugendhat by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, which is considered one of the most important buildings of modernism in Europe.
The urbanized northeast of the country is still strongly marked by the upheaval that has taken place here in mining and industry in recent decades. But that also makes the region one of the liveliest and most creative in the entire country. Ostrava in particular offers exciting opportunities here. The contrast to this is the picturesque Olomouc, so get ready for a region of contrasts and exciting discoveries off the beaten track!
