Slovenia was always considered a model student and economic engine in the former Yugoslavia. The country came through the dark 1990s relatively unscathed and was able to continue its upswing after the transformation from a socialist to a democratic country. Since 2004 EU member, the country at the border of the Schengen area presents itself today as a modern state, which nevertheless feels obligated to its rich history and its traditions.
Although Slovenia is only about as large as New Jersey and has only about as many inhabitants as Houston, visitors find here a variety, which impresses. Whether you want to hike in the foothills of the Alps, jump into the water on the Adriatic coast or explore the beautiful capital Ljubljana – it never gets boring in Slovenia. Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital, is picturesquely situated on the Ljubljanica River and presents itself less like a hectic European metropolis and more like a cozy little city. Architecture fans in particular will find a lot to like here. The Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik, for example, has left his mark on the city and given it a face that is unique in Europe.
The pleasant river landscape of the Drava characterizes the eastern part of the country along the Austrian, Hungarian and Croatian border. Here, in Lower Styria, is also Maribor is situated, the second largest city in the country and former cultural capital of Europe. Here you will find not only the oldest vine in the world, but also several churches and squares worth seeing.
The heart of Slovenia around the capital Ljubljana is characterized by a still untouched nature in many places. Here, in Carniola, you can spend the most beautiful active vacation of the country and make extensive hiking tours. Particularly beautiful is the cave castle Predjama from the 12th century, which looks as if it has been carved into the rock.

They are the only UNESCO World Heritage Site – and the largest underground canyon in Europe!
